In a moving acceptance speech, media proprietor, talk show host, producer, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey accepted Golden Globe’s DeMille Award. During the speech, Winfrey addressed the elephant in the room that no one else had touched on. With a message to the young girls watching she exclaimed: “A new day is on the horizon.”
Winfrey’s message came during a Golden Globes ceremony notable for being the first major award show since Hollywood first began addressing rampant sexual harassment against women in the entertainment industry and beyond.
This year’s ceremony was one of the most political yet and saw the red carpet awash with A-list actresses wearing black.
Oprah Winfrey’s impassioned call for “a brighter morning even in our darkest nights”. In what has been proclaimed as a moving, powerful and passionate delivery Winfrey said “For too long, “women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak the truth to the power of those [abusive] men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”
It was her exhortation of the legions of women who have called out sexual harassers — and her dream of a day “when nobody has to say ‘me too’ again” — that moved many across the nation thinking Winfrey might be just what the Democrats need.
