First African American Automobile Manufacturer
Frederick Patterson was the first African American automobile manufacturer in the United States.
Frederick Douglas Patterson was born in 1871, the son of an ex-slave, Charles Richard Patterson, who had escaped from Virginia to Ohio and eventually owned a carriage business. After a short career as a teacher, Frederick joined his father and transitioned the company from building carriages to building automobiles.
